Distinguished Building Award Submission
Asked by the developer, the design for a new 90,000 SF LEED Silver Barney’s NY flagship store located in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood needed to create an experience that was suitable for the luxury goods purveyor and its loyal clients. It began, steeped in history, with the dramatic six story glass corner which, rather than exposing as most retailers feel obliged to do, was designed around the perception and drama of anticipation; the art of seduction rather than the vulgarity of flashing. The screen, that was designed to achieve this, was made of patterned metal panels which were created with a laser. With the glow of the store behind the screen of the
panels, a subtle pattern is revealed to all who approach the store, while breaking down the massive scale of the corner. The building was recently sold for the highest recorded price ($1000/SF) in the history of Chicago retail architecture.
