Superior St. Residence

Interior Architecture Award Submission

The Superior St residence is 3800 SF interior build-out in an existing high rise condominium building in downtown Chicago. The client chose the bare shell of open space, for its potential in fulfilling his desire for a sleek and soothing space and for the nearly 360 degree views.

The curtain wall on the three sided space vary from an octagonal bay to a canted south facing wall. This variation, along with existing concrete columns, stubbed up plumbing and entry door locations, demanded consideration for how the residential program would locate.

From the 3 sided circulation spine frosted glass doors lead to a master bedroom suite, a sitting room and a guest bedroom suite while allowing natural light to penetrate throughout. Its ceiling was dropped to conceal ductwork in a series of undulating light shelves that pick up on inverse angles found in the existing curtain wall.

The clients hope for a clean space was coupled with the wish for it not to feel cold or sterile. The clean detailing and flowing spaces, have the warm backdrop of Santos mahogany flooring and the textures and colors chosen by the interior designer.
