Spencer Stuart Chicago Consulting

Interior Architecture Award Submission

A global executive search consultancy based in Chicago, Spencer Stuart recently moved its headquarters to four floors of a glass skyscraper along the Chicago River. In its new headquarters, Spencer Stuart sought to express both its global reach and the local, intimate nature of its services.

The form and symbolism of the Trunnion Bascule bridges along the Chicago River was used throughout the space to celebrate multiple connections: among employees; between clients and job candidates; from Spencer Stuart to Chicago to the world. Underscoring this motif is a direct view of the bridges, which can be seen through south-facing windows in the reception area. The metaphor of the bridge encompasses the connection and movement of people through space.

At the landing of the monumental staircase, 13 color-changing LED-strips represent the time-zones where Spencer Stuart has offices and tracks the sun in those zones. Throughout the day, colorful wave patterns emerge, signifying the energy that moves through the firm and its clients worldwide.

To maximize confidentiality, the space plan controls views, acoustics, and circulation, while remaining functionally intuitive. In a similar discreet vein, finishes are subtle yet luxurious, giving the space the air and function of premier hospitality environment.
