Northwestern Memorial Hospital Outpatient Imaging Center

Interior Architecture Award Submission

Situated in the heart of downtown Chicago is the Outpatient Imaging Center of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH). The challenge was to create a space that supports high quality care and the hospitalís primary goal of putting patients first. It was also necessary that the new interior provides NMH a competitive edge in the marketplace as well as be efficient and flexible.

Earth-toned colors, soft indirect lighting, and nature-inspired artwork are consistent throughout the design to reduce stress and create a timeless space. Additionally, custom backlit nature photography, programmable color-changing LED lighting, and music are positive distractions in the imaging rooms to reduce patient anxiety during examinations.

Design continuity trails into the staff areas. An improved work environment was created with ergonomic radiology reading rooms, state-of-the-art technologies, break rooms, and showers.

Overall, this project has been very successful. Since opening, the Imaging Center has had the highest patient satisfaction scores ever received. The appropriate application of color, texture, and form provide intuitive wayfinding, spatial hierarchy, and visual interest. As a result, this warm, inviting interior is comfortable and psychologically supportive for patients, families, and employees.
