Unbuilt Design Award Submission
The design for ADNEC Arena is inspired and guided by a desire for an indigenous, contextual and sustainable architecture.
Of all solids having a given volume, the sphere is the one with the smallest surface area. We have adopted this fundamental principle of efficiency in enclosing the space of the arena within an ellipsoidal form which is a direct derivative of the sphere.
This minimal surface area of the Arena enclosure is designed to produce the greatest technological and aesthetic effects. The outer surface of the shell is clad in durable titanium that has an iridescent quality. The inner surface is fitted with warm colored wood panels that are highly adaptable. It has the intelligent flexibility to change according to the sun and programmed events within the Arena, admitting diffuse natural daylight when desired.
The experience of visiting the arena has been designed to create a lasting impression. From the moment of arrival, the easily understood, yet intricate form of the exterior is reinforced by a dynamic, lively interior environment. The spaces, materials and amenities are designed to heighten the impact of the performance.
