This Lake Michigan summer house consists of three distinct structures connected by a continuous wooden terrace facing the water. A beautifully detailed post and beam structure is exposed indoors and out. The jury was excited to see "Japanese patterns of joining used to lighten the American vernacular and bring it into context with simple modern architecture." Even in the attic, which houses mechanical equipment and dormitory space, the purely functional structure adds to the drama of this hideaway for the owners' grandchildren and their friends.
