This two-story, 3,400-square-foot single-family house is located in a beach community near Los Angeles. Designed by architect Gerald Horn of Holabird & Root LLP, the house is set upon a concrete base, and its exterior features a steel structure with teak window infill and skewed upper wings that respond to the fan-shaped building lot. Careful planning takes full advantage of the dramatic site, breathtaking views, and provides ample natural light. The design maximizes the building's height while adhering to the community's strict code requirements.
The interior is detailed with mahogany beams and steel brackets. The upper floor comprises the kitchen, living room, dining area, and master bedroom and provides continuous, unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. The lower floor is situated around a private courtyard and includes a guest room, office, and family entertainment area. The jury praised the home's airy spaces, attention to detailing, and high-tech sensibility.
