The Sky-Line Club Renovation

Chicago, Illinois / United States of America

Continuously operating since October of 1926, The Sky-Line Club sits atop a landmarked high-rise on Michigan Avenue. Major elements of the club’s interior originate from an old ale house in the Sussex region of southern England. Purchased 90 years ago, it was carefully dismantled and reconstructed at its present site. Many of the paintings and furnishings from the original pub grace the interior today.

Over the decades, redecorations and age had hidden the club’s original character. Since opening, the club had only been accessible via a flight of stairs from the highest elevator-served floor affecting accessibility. The club originally had terrace dining, but this was lost to deteriorating roof conditions.

The restoration project was commissioned in 2012 to address accessibility, add new restrooms, add modern life safety systems, restore the original character and architectural components including furnishings and artwork, and reintroduce terrace dining.

The club’s original lobby was raised to the level of the dining room and an elevator was extended to the new level. This entailed reconfiguring 42” plate girders in the top of the tower and the elevator equipment. All interior renovations adhered to the guidelines of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the National Park Service.

The new dining terrace was achieved by the installation of a fluid-applied roof system and pavers, custom stainless railings and a glass windscreen. The club's original exterior steel-cased windows and doors fronting the terrace were fully restored.
