Midwest Poolhouse

(Confidential), Illinois / United States of America

Ancillary to a summer residence designed by the architect a few years ago, the pool house is a meeting place for the many residents within an expansive family farm estate. The programmatic functions of the pool house are a collection of wood and glass pavilions connected by a solid Douglas Fir trellis structure.  Moreover, the structure of the trellis shows through as beams and columns integrated within the walls, creating a consistent architectural expression.

Changing Room functions are physically separated to allow the definition of a glass enclosure around the main pool house living space. This space is further delineated with a continuous glazed clerestory, opening views of the stainless steel truss system from the exterior. Inside the living space, the Douglas Fir of the trellis is left in its natural state, with the warmth of the wood accentuated by illuminated fabric panels.  The extension of the stone pool deck paving adds to the pavilion quality of the pool house.  Around the main interior space, wood louvers are embedded within the structure of the trellis, modulating direct sunlight during hot summer days and providing ample shade for outdoor terrace spaces.
