LAKESIDE THINK TANK

LAKESIDE, Michigan / United States of America

With the main house demolished, an abandoned artist studio overlooking Lake Michigan was resurrected into a corporate retreat/guest house.  The box (24'-6" x 42'-6") was gutted down to its structural shell, preserving the old wood floors and fireplace wall.

The design goal was to express the simplicity of the existing structure from the interior and exterior. Our Client wished to explore the practicality of renovating "green" on a budget; using sustainable building methods and locally sourced materials.

Solar and photovoltaic panels were eliminated due to limited use of the building, somewhat shady location and the upfront cost vs. long-term payback.  A wind turbine was installed on the roof, but the resulting reverberation through the structure was unsettling.  In the end, a tank less water heater and a horizontal geothermal system made the most sense.  Cement siding and trim, Low E high efficiency glass panels, cork flooring and wall covering, gilasi recycled countertops, and salvaged materials are a few of the products used throughout the project.

The result resembles a modern post and beam rustic barn that relates to the vernacular of the local cottages and farms.
