Cool Art, Technology and Sustainability at the Frost
The Frost Art Museum, Florida International University

Funded by a technology grant, the Frost Art Museum’s family gallery is “super chill,” designed for active learning and demonstrating everyone is hard-wired for creativity.

A neon artwork and window seat signal interaction and make the entryway visible and inviting from the campus, improving security, accessibility, and enabling the orientation process. Families and Florida International University students are attracted to the all-white interior as a blank slate for artistic expression and open-ended media exploration. Frost-me stations, Smart Table™, and iPads transform a small project and modest budget into an interpretive landscape of technology, art installations, art-making, and social engagement.

The responsible and artful approach to the 750 SF renovation strategically reused embodied energies of existing walls, ceilings and infrastructure; carpeting of 80% recycled fishing net content; and LEDs and UV filters to retrofit track lighting, effectively lowering temperature, humidity, and glare. Special features include an irresistible touch-sensitive bench whose 80 LEDs emit responsive patterns and a recycled plastic Blue Alligator that extends the family experience into the sculpture park. This cool gallery connects visitors of all ages to art, the Frost Art Museum, and the campus using traditional and technological methods of art-making and revealing the beauty of sustainable strategies.
