Historic Bungalow Kitchen
Chicago, Illinois / United States of America
The kitchen of this historic Chicago bungalow was in need of an update but an enclosed stairway stood between it and access to daylight and a view of the backyard. While an open space in plan, the L shape room felt awkward and did not work as the entertainment and gathering space for the family. Replacing the stair with a walk out exterior deck provided the family with an outdoor dining space. This also allowed the interior space to be opened up for a bright new kitchen interior that returned to the original style of this vintage home. The traditionally styled renovation incorporated the modern lifestyle of the family by including an entertainment center and seating area immediately adjacent to the kitchen. A built-in eating area doubles for game night where the family can spend time together while preparing meals and a center island allows for guests to gather. Base cabinetry is painted with traditional gray and soapstone countertops are balanced with the warmth of wood trim and upper cabinetry. Reeded glass pantry doors add an extra sparkle to the bright new kitchen space that has been returned to the original historic style of the home.
