945 Residence

Chicago, Illinois / United States of America

Silver & Zinc

For this residence, sustainability, natural light and continued spatial flow were vital for its narrow urban location.  The goal was to create a smart, sustainable residence with a neighborhood scale.

The exterior material palette consists of thermal mass cast-in-place concrete walls and long life vertical zinc panels.  These materials counter the lightness of the interiors consisting of open, fluid interior spaces with openings on the southern side for direct daylighting.  Further on the interior, reclaimed industrial plank wood flooring, salvaged decorative tile and refurbished fixtures all add to the overall goal.

The residence's roof level hides a private office overlooking a fully landscaped green roof environment supplied with collected rain water when available.  Added to this are solar panels located on the upper roof, positioned slightly out of site from the street to keep in scale with the neighborhood.  These elements are part of a list of features that gave this residence a Silver Certification from LEED For Homes.
