Join us for a June 28 tour of the TRUMPF Smart Factory which was featured on the cover of Architect magazine. This facility for the German machine and laser manufacturer showcases the precision of digital fabrication. A reception sponsored by IMEG on the patio will open and close the event.
The TRUMPF Smart Factory is prominently located along I-90’s “Golden Corridor” against the backdrop of surrounding industrial zones. The site sits in the center of the sheet metal processing industry of North America, just west of O’Hare International Airport. Architects for the project are Berlin-based Barkow Leibinger Architekten (design architect) and Itasca-based Heitman Architects (architect of record).
The building is organized within two large intersecting volumes, under a sloping roofline that connects the highway views through a sophisticated machine world to restored wetland habitats, rain gardens, bike paths, and nature trails beyond. The building exterior, with its rough cladding of corrugated COR-TEN steel and its floor-to-ceiling glazing, emphasizes both its industrial context and its display function. The design is based on eleven custom Vierendeel trusses that span 140’ across a column-free showroom. These trusses were laser-cut on TRUMPF machines and weigh over one ton each. The dense black steel structure is fondly referred to as “The Black Forest.”
