Morgan Park Sports Center
Chicago, Illinois / United States of America
The Beverly / Morgan Park Sports Center, owned by the Chicago Park District, is a new 64,000 SF building which contains an indoor ice rink facility, gymnastics center, two classrooms and support program spaces. The project site of 2.63 acres is comprised of two city-owned properties and accommodates 73 parking stalls with designated spaces for fuel efficient vehicles.
The state-of-the-art skating facility was constructed per NHL dimensions and will accommodate year-round competitive hockey, figure-skating and recreational ice skating. There are 4 team locker rooms and 2 multi-purpose locker rooms to accommodate up to 180 skaters. The ice arena stands along with the viewing balconies on each end allow for a total capacity of 845 spectators.
The 11,700 SF world-class training gymnastics gym will be a year round practice facility with the ability to accommodate standard USGA competitions. The gym contains 25 pieces of equipment situated around the floor exercise platform, landing pit and designated area for young gymnastics training and trampoline training.
In addition to the recreation areas, there are spaces for the community to meet on the mezzanine level. The mezzanine also includes a classroom with an athletic floor, mirrored wall and ballet bars for dance classes. A larger classroom overlooks the gymnastics gym with large interior windows and can accommodate up to 70 people. The space can also be divided into two equal sized classrooms using an operable partition for additional flexibility.
The building’s design is constructed of two well-articulated precast concrete volumes which hold the two primary services connected by a detailed glass connection that provides street appeal along Western Avenue and a visual connection to the activity within. The building focuses on sustainable principals with a goal of achieving LEED certified status.
