Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center

Baton Rouge, Louisiana / United States of America

The 64,000 sf renovation of the Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center is the result of strategic conversations with the community and care team to develop a place for healing and survivorship. A series of destinations and paths were developed as places to engage, rest and revive, reflective of the design concept “Journey and Oasis”. Renovations included redevelopment of the multi-disciplinary clinic, imaging and infusion suite. A signature “glass box” signals the new entry and extends the length of the building, redefining the entry sequence and establishing the start of a pathway linking the Cancer Center and Hospital. This reimagined front porch offers places to rest along a wall of plants, wood and native stone. Slowly rotating fans offer reprieve from the heat. The transparent canopy extends inside, celebrating natural light and sky views while masking the parking garage; utilizing space that was formerly an alley. A greeter desk and soft seating positioned along the wood paneled wall, that continues from outside in, adding warmth while absorbing noise. A donor wall is sheltered by a commissioned Gemeaux glass installation. This art glass is rediscovered from within the meditation room on level two. The sweeping curve of the rain-glass reflects and transmits natural light and protects privacy of those within the clinic, extending upward as the railing for the second floor overlook that connects amenities including registration and conference center. The infusion center features dimmable lighting and heated seating in semi-private spaces with views to the sky. A dedicated pharmacy reduced wait time from two hours to less than thirty minutes. Post renovations, patients served almost doubled and hospital visits increased by twenty-six percent. Powerful influences of nature and art at destinations and along paths distract often frightened visitors, flooding them with hope and empowerment.
