Ewing Marion Kauffman School
Kansas City, Missouri / United States of America
The campus consists of an upper middle/high school building, a shared amenity building containing a gymnasium and cafeteria/commons, and a lower middle school building that is connected by a bridge over a utility easement. Bars of classrooms sit across from interaction spaces where students learn together and where the school conducts programs more unique to its curriculum, its professional development training meetings. The lower middle school is comprised of a bar containing these spaces that has been laminated to an existing office building which was renovated to contain typical classrooms. In the upper middle/high school, a centrally located multi-level space links its two typical classroom levels on the second and third floors, as well as the adjacent double-height lobby. This volume provides opportunities for shared activities to take place on each level, together or separately, with its connecting theater seating. To create a desired transparency within the school, collaborative spaces are open to circulation and large windows along classroom walls allow natural light to penetrate deep into the building, while encouraging students, staff and visitors to observe the learning process as they circulate.
