CHICAGO, Illinois / United States of America
The Chicago single-family residence sustains an urban townhome relationship with its surrounding context while applying a sophisticated logic of materials and construction. Throughout the home dynamic spatial relationships develop through overlapping materials and layering of the interior and exterior spaces. From the interior visual connections are made with outdoor landscaping, garden terraces and the adjacent park. The simple yet rich palette creates minimal spaces that emphasize the family’s activities and interests including artwork and an extensive fish collection showcased through integrated aquariums. The main stair of the home provides circulation through three floors and the roof deck terrace. At the top of the stair a large light monitor allows natural light deep into the building, while a railing of stainless steel and translucent glazing reflect and diffuse the light, adding to the dynamics of the space. A central pendant light fixture composed of many silken cords each holding a lamp, stretch throughout the stairway, lighting one’s path upward through the home. The solid ash of the floor carries through to the treads of the stair, further connecting each level.
