1700 Huangxing Road
Shanghai, N/A / China
The building is part of a mixed-use district and is intended to be a new anchor for a developing district on the outer edge of Shanghai. This 22-story office tower will house the headquarters for a mining company. Solid natural materials such as terra cotta and black granite were used to symbolize the excavation of the earth. A terra cotta “sleeve” provides shading and conforms to the Shanghai energy code while allowing views of the surrounding city. The terra cotta also refers back to traditional Chinese building materials. This skin gives the building an alternating presence of solidity and transparency as you move around its site. The multi-level lobby design incorporates ribbons of black granite along with a 25-meter tall feature wall connecting to a lower level sunken retail garden. The simply shaped building is designed to maximize tenant flexibility, day-lighting and energy use. The tower top beacon contains multiple double height conference spaces and an expansive executive conferencing floor.
