Chicago, Illinois / United States of America
Our clients acquired two unfinished penthouse units in a boutique Gold Coast building with the goal of transforming them into their primary residence. The units included private rooftop access and sweeping city and lake views.
With an existing L-shaped footprint, the main functions of the home were divided into a public and private wing. The primary entry invites guests into the connective north gallery and library, while allowing glimpses of the lake immediately upon entering. A wine room and studies complete the north wing. The hub of the home is at the intersection of the wing. Here, the kitchen and family room come together, while the dining room is given the highest honor inside the rotunda. Throughout, spatial layering and visual connections create depth and interest in the linear plan.
At the end of the private hall, an open staircase with dark wood treads ascends around a natural wood spine, blending the new wood roofdeck enclosure with the interior.
In all design decisions, our integrated architecture and interiors team focused on a unified aesthetic, brining a refined and clean-lined elegance to the home, a modern interpretation of a Parisian apartment.
