Kishwaukee College Student Life Center
Malta, Illinois / United States of America
This Student Center is the new hub of student life for this campus. Conceived as a gateway to the college, the new Student Center gives the campus a much needed new identity. The 76,000 SF student center was designed to accommodate increased student demand for financial aid, registration and counseling services, an expanded bookstore, dining facilities, student activity spaces and administrative offices. The new L-shaped building sensitively connects to the existing main campus building, creating a vibrant exterior courtyard used for social activities, outdoor dining, art and performance.
The building is organized along a main circulation spine; a spacious two-story, light-filled lobby and lounge welcome students and visitors. The student activity spaces are directly adjacent, visible and accessible from the lobby, encouraging students to participate in campus life. The main student lounge and dining areas occupy the central part of the first floor, creating a synergy between uses and activities. On the second floor, the student service offices occupy the southern half of the building footprint. A bridge corridor separates these spaces from the executive administration offices, which require a quieter environment.
The new building is clad in wood-grain phenolic resin panels, aluminum composite panels, pre-cast concrete panels and glass.
