Oak Brook, Illinois / United States of America
Hub Group’s build-to-suit international headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois was envisioned as a high-tech loft of the future. Elegant in its bare-bones simplicity, the building eschews conventional building finishes to embrace a transparent, spacious design ethos. As a result, the 130,000 SF, four-story, LEED Gold facility reinforces Hub Group’s business goals, culture, brand, and commitment to sustainability. The architect created a minimalist, streamlined building, featuring a high-performance, 10’ high glass curtain wall to optimize natural light and views while underscoring the company’s core value of transparency. The architect achieved an open, airy work environment by eliminating suspended ceilings in the open work areas, expanding the vertical dimension within a conventional floor-to-floor height. By showcasing structural and mechanical systems, the architect reduced costs and evoked an industrial feel aligned with Hub Group’s transportation work. The steel frame is celebrated through unfinished columns and beams, with x-bracing efficiently resolving lateral forces in lieu of more expensive moment frames. Sustainable features include a high-efficiency HVAC system, energy efficient lighting controls, and storm water harvesting. Integrating sustainability at all project levels ensured that the building suits its context, encourages healthy and sustainable lifestyle choices, supports the employee workspace, and embodies Hub Group’s brand.
