Grand Hyatt Dalian Detail

Dalian, N/A / China

Grand Hyatt Dalian is a 195m mixed-use tower located in China's northeastern coastal city of Dalian. The glass enclosed triangular tower stands as a beacon on the shores of the Yellow Sea, while the rusticated podium integrates contextually to the adjacent development through its scale and materiality. Programmatically the project includes a hotel, serviced apartments, two ballrooms, three restaurants, meeting facilities, spa, and an indoor swimming pool overlooking the bay. The complex podium enclosure utilizes a composition of undulating honed and rusticated stone finishes that provide a more intimate scale while defining the compound podium forms. Encased in locally sourced granite which complements the neighboring buildings, the resulting "raked" profile creates a detail capable of solving multiple aesthetic and pragmatic needs. The main arrival court illustrates this flexibility best by enhancing the creation of shadows along the rounded surfaces as the sun moves across the sky by day. Stainless steel lighting elements are integrated into the same detail, providing a similar reading of intimacy across the rusticated surfaces in the evening. Likewise, the honed stone is removed to create horizontal air slots that are artfully located between the bands of rusticated stone in order to meet the podium's mechanical requirements.
