Toronto, N/A / Canada
Davies, Ward, Phillips & Vineberg LLP has relocated their downtown Toronto headquarters to the LEED® NC Gold certified RBC Centre. The “loft-like” quality of the existing base building was intended for an open floor plan and included an under-air distribution system that created a challenge for designers due to its sound transmission. DWPV’s design delivers the sophisticated feel of a law firm through the development of cellular offices, while celebrating the existing structure of the base building through the use of exposed concrete beams and ceilings in a sculptural fashion.
Special attention was paid to the design of the private offices. A kit-of-parts strategy was implemented to allow for customization within the confines of a preselected group of elements. Baffles and partitions were used to maintain acoustic privacy between offices. The interconnecting staircase, food support spaces and staff lounge encourage casual encounters and are intended to promote greater interaction among the staff. The conference center concentrates high-end finishes in the client-facing zone, and movable walls provide flexibility for a variety of gatherings. Sustainable aspects informed the entire project and include daylight maximization, material and fixture selection and air quality control. The office design earned a LEED® CI Gold rating.
