The Big Ten Conference represents 14 member institutions and 280 national championships. Seeking a new headquarters, the Conference needed space to host nearly 200 meetings each year and offices for 40 full-time employees that produce more than 1200 events annually. Key to the project’s success would be a new location in the hospitality and entertainment district of Rosemont, Illinois, as the organization regularly hosts visitors who mostly travel through nearby O’Hare International (to mitigate overhead aircraft sounds, the team performed acoustic studies and modified the glazing systems). The resulting facility, distinctively clad in warm terra cotta, balances the Conference’s academics/athletics identity with the professional image of a corporate headquarters. The ground floor features the Big Ten Experience, an interactive attraction open to the public that celebrates the organization’s 120-year history in college athletics. A high-end restaurant offers business travelers the opportunity to relax and entertain. A technologically-advanced conferencing center and an “officiating command center” are also housed within. Designed for sustainability, the building features high-performance curtain wall and window systems, occupancy sensors in rooms to help minimize unused lighting, large exterior windows to bring in natural daylight, and light colored and vegetated roofing materials to minimize the building’s heat-island contribution.
