259 East Erie

Chicago, Illinois / United States of America

Northwestern Medicine’s new outpatient care facility at 259 East Erie Street is a 26 story urban high-rise building on a compact urban site, positioned to connect to other sites of care . It is a southern gateway to the Northwestern campus in Chicago. The facility houses medical clinics, diagnostic services and a surgical suite in addition to street-level retail activity and a hotel-caliber drive-up entrance creating vibrancy at the ground level.

The building skin creates a lighter aesthetic and incorporates more glazing than other Northwestern buildings, without deviating from the language used on the campus.  This careful attention to brand is carried through to the interior of the building. From the drive-up entrance to the lobby to the retail spaces, an organized geometry is juxtaposed against curvilinear forms to create an experience that reinforces the reputation of Northwestern Medicine & emphasizes a bright, airy, and inviting environment.

The design team leveraged our proprietary universal grid to assure that the Owner could  support many different clinic layouts while maintaining flexibility to support other functions over time,  achieving  maximum flexibility & speed-to-market with assurance that the building would still be utilized for highly efficient, operationally-optimized, and patient-centered interior fit-outs for every floor.
