Wilmette Residence Stair

Wilmette, Illinois / United States of America

Embedded within the Alaskan yellow cedar wooden box of a residential interior is a central stair, a bold composition of curving, metallic steel supports and walnut treads. The stair hall, also serving as the main entry to the home, is wrapped in layers of textured glass organized in a stainless steel frame.

Adjacent to the stair is a large central skylight occupies the heart of the plan, highlighting the primary space of the home on the second floor: a family library. Here, the family work and play together. The steel & glass assembly of the stair reflects daylight from the skylight above and provides an even illumination of the library.
