West Washington Park Lifestyle Center and Restoration Campus
Chicago, Illinois / United States of America
This "metadesign" for West Washington Park brings new life to this blighted inner-city region.
This multi-block 160-acre project revitalizes this portion of Chicago's urban core by bringing advanced retail and residences to an underdeveloped part of the city. These in turn are used to support an educational campus community at the heart of the project, dedicated to improving the lives of inner city youth. The historic Raber House mansion, renovated and at the center of this campus, is operationally integrated into its functions. Sustainable design, including public transportation and green building strategies, make this development state-of-the-art.
The master plan responds to the urban grid to engage the expressway and views to the west; and to create a sense of enclosed community to the east. A sense of place and community is created through the architectural massing which buffers the development from the adjacent roads, as well as through architectural design, streetscaping, and landscaping.
This ambitious and challenging project uses architecture and planning solutions to address issues of health, crime, education, transportation, environment, and family life. Its unique architectural and landscape design is innovative and welcoming. It repositions this blighted area as a new urban gateway and amenity.
