Valparaiso University Duesenberg Welcome Center

Valparaiso, Indiana / United States of America

The goal for Valparaiso University was to create a new campus gateway and welcoming experience for prospective students, their families, alumni, and guests.

Upon entering campus, the Welcome Center is designed to frame views of the Chapel of the Resurrection (the iconic center of campus, embodying the faith-based values on which the University was founded) with a gentle floating sloping roof, as well as with views from within. This is combined with the transparency of the lobby, to provide an inviting warm glow after dusk. The rising roof-ceiling form also reflects internal functions, from the most public at high ceilings, to the most private at lower ceiling areas.

Home to the Office of Admission, the varied spaces and warm finishes provide settings for diverse activities from contemplation to meetings and social gatherings, while providing a gallery backdrop for telling the story of Valparaiso University.

The completed Welcome Center was referred to as "aspirational" by University President Mark Heckler.
