University of Chicago Administration Building Portal

Chicago, Illinois / United States of America

The Edward H. Levi Administration Building, prominently placed at the axis terminus of the University of Chicago Quadrangle, represented itself as a barrier by limiting the free movement through campus along 58th Street. Pedestrians were either required to travel around the building or walk through the lobby, exposing it to unnecessary air and temperature infiltration. The solution was to open up the building by creating a portal. This re-connection to campus brought about the challenge of how to detail a condition that was once interior space for exterior performance requirements. The result was an asymmetrical, faceted façade of transparent, translucent and opaque glass which integrates a new material with the existing Art Deco building. The Divine Detail is the articulation of the seamless portal wall creating a natural, harmonious link through campus.
