The John Marshall Law School Urban Campus Expansion

Chicago, Illinois / United States of America

The John Marshall Law School is a distinguished institution of legal education, located at the epicenter of Chicago's vibrant South Loop Education Corridor. JMLS redeveloped the spaces that house the project as part of its commitment to accessible legal education in the Loop. The project transforms underutilized retail units into the campus's primary student interactive and community outreach space. It engages the school with the broader urban context, creates a collaborative cyber café, provides dignified office space for student's professional interaction with veterans seeking legal assistance, and establishes a prominent Main Entrance for the school on Chicago's famous State Street.

The First Floor curtainwall was rebuilt, flooding the interiors with light and urban views, while showcasing school activities to passersby. These spaces include a new cyber café, bookstore, conference rooms, and the Veterans Legal Clinic offices. A new stair links lounge and student service areas on two floors to encourage pedestrian traffic and reduce the load on the building's elevators. A seamless connection between the Student Commons and Clinic spaces enables access for students and staff, while a separate lobby on Jackson Boulevard provides veterans a dignified and professional entrance where they can seek out pro-bono clinical legal assistance.
