PAHC Studio

Chicago, Illinois / United States of America

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

While artists have long jeopardized their health for their practice, the PAHC Studio demonstrates a new standard in healthy spaces for art production.

The studio is situated within a 1920s commercial building that lacked sufficient fresh air intake and exhaust. The design coordinates a specialized mechanical system and organizes the program to isolate hazardous art materials.

Exhaust hoods, a continuous flow extraction system, and movable extraction arms facilitate the artist's work with potentially toxic materials.

Art-making studios are organized around a central library. The artist's iterative process and work at multiple scales necessitated furnishings with maximum functionality.

Flexible lighting and exhibit systems are easily adjusted, moved, and reconfigured.

Studio walls double as work surfaces and provide additional exhibit space for works in progress.

Unique details for ordinary elements such as radiator covers contribute to a clean, comfortable environment.

A customized floor-to-ceiling storage system serves as an accessible archive.

The seamless flooring connects the studios, facilitating the movement of materials, artwork, and people. Its resilient under layer eases extended periods of working while standing.

Aligning materials in practical but surprising ways allowed for the transformation of the studio's technical requirements into a crisp, meditative, and healthy space for art making.
