O’Hare International Airport Redevelopment of Terminal 5 Concessions Program
Chicago, Illinois / United States of America
The Concessions Program at O'Hare's Terminal 5 was expanded from 15,000 to 26,000 sf. To accomplish this, the original TSA Checkpoint was relocated, new concessions areas were added throughout the terminal and infrastructure modifications were made to support this redevelopment.
The design team was tasked with creating public restrooms on both the pre-security as well as post-security sides' of the TSA checkpoint that would speak to the new high-end experience of Terminal 5. The new restrooms utilized stylish finishes such as stainless steel partitions, unique light fixtures, feature mosaic tile walls, quartz countertops, and glass wall panels with custom graphics.
In relocating the existing TSA Checkpoint, the design team was able to create a more inviting and interesting TSA experience for passengers featuring a 22-foot glass/graphic wall, while greatly improving the efficiency of the checkpoint.
In addition to the glass wall, the designers utilized unique light fixtures and ceiling finishes which coordinate with the floor tile as you continue through the space. In using these technique's the design team was able to achieve a calming and interesting space for passengers in a high-stress environment that has greatly reduced queuing times and improved the overall passenger experience.
