Northwest Community Hospital Renaissance Project

Arlington Heights, Illinois / United States of America

Northwest Community Hospital's new patient care addition positions the hospital with the ability to adapt easily to increased acuity levels of patients with a minimum disruption to care. The patient care addition maintains a relatively small footprint; the tower's triangular form shortens travel distances for staff. The design also acknowledges the growing need to access infrastructure as the decentralization of technology continues to expand. The building uses a sculptural approach to defining the form, bending and peeling away from the existing geometries of the international style campus, energetically redefining the campus's relationship to the community. Additional planning and design goals include pursuing LEED-NC Silver certification and creating a holistic environment, focusing primarily on the reduction of noise in the patient environment and providing access to gardens and daylight. Accessible balconies are provided on each floor as well as full height windows in patient rooms and at the end of corridors on the patient units to provide as much natural light as possible.
