Myers Place

Mt. Prospect, Illinois / United States of America

Myers Place is a first-of-its-kind 39-unit tax-credit community-based supportive residential development for residents with disabilities to live independently as they transition towards self-sufficiency.

Since this is an affordable development, special attention was given to construction that is economical to build yet sustainable for long-term maintenance and durability. Its design features efficient, clean, functional common areas, supportive retail and community spaces, and unit layouts; and uses a system of standard window types and prefabricated precast-concrete walls with inset brick and prefabricated concrete floors and structure. Despite this standardization, a lively blend of cast stone and face brick, a variety of brick colors, and details that emphasize the different interior uses of the building, create a "sense of place."

"I've been working in affordable housing for 17 years now and this is the first time that I really feel like the State has had a breakthrough in terms of its approach to housing of people with disabilities," said Mary Kenney, Executive Director of the Illinois Housing Development Authority, of the local effort to get people with disabilities back into their communities. "It's healthier for the people and it's less expensive for the State. Clearly, it's a better option than institutions."
