Chicago, Illinois / United States of America
The University of Chicago is the anchor tenant for Harper Court, a new retail/mixed use tower on the north side of Hyde Park, housing administrative departments in nine of the tower's twelve floors. The design champions a sense of community with a welcoming presence and visual connection to Hyde Park that starts with the entry lobby and continues through the office space. The historic context of the campus is translated into a modern language with contemporary integration of millwork elements, ashlar tile patterns that mimic slate walkways and colored glass reminiscent of the gothic stained glass windows found throughout the campus. Transparency, crisp architecture and bold colors set the tone for this collaborative work environment. Alternating open-office neighborhoods and glass-front perimeter offices provide staff with views of the Chicago skyline and access to natural light. A variety of space types offer opportunities for collaboration including a café, teaming rooms, conferencing, training and a roof terrace.
Achieving LEED-CI Platinum certification with a cost effective budget approach required innovative planning and technical design solutions. Sustainable choices focused on system efficiencies, water reduction, use of sustainable building materials, enhanced commissioning and a 20-year commitment to the office space.
