Bank of America Plaza
Unbuilt Design Award Submission
The Bank of America Plaza dominates the Dallas skyline and is visible for miles, especially at night. Known by many as the “Emerald City” because of its green accent lights, it is the landmark for the Central Business District and, as the city’s tallest building, an iconic structure in Dallas.
The architect was challenged to redevelop the campus to create a strong sense of place. The proposed concept strengthens the landmark with an energetic ground plane intended to realign the focus of downtown Dallas. Components include:
Creating a new approach, entry, and lobby appropriate to the Tower’s status.
Injecting an oasis of landscape, water, and the arts into the ground plane.
Promoting the vision of an urban piazza by creating a pedestrian-focused environment rather than a vehicle-dominated one.
Revitalizing the lower retail concourse through better connectivity with the ground plane, Tower, and future structures.
Capitalizing on the Tower’s height with an observation deck accessed via high-speed glass elevators that hug the exterior of the building.
The design of a zero-energy 1,000-car garage located below grade to the Tower and connected via bridges to the existing parking structure.
Allowance for construction of a future hotel adjacent to the Tower.
