Shanghai Huawei Technologies Corporate Campus Winner
Distinguished Building Award, Citation of Merit
Huawei Technologies, one of the world’s leading telecommunications firms, sought a 300,000 sm campus and technologically advanced workplace that fosters community and communication across various research, development and business departments. The site plan organizes the Research and Development (R+D) program into two linear five-story buildings to provide horizontally connected, large flexible floors. Their interiors are divided into open-office work plans and closed laboratories. Each of the building modules has expansive views and carefully controlled daylighting by an externally ventilated double wall with integrated solar louver. Building modules are linked by employee entrances and common cores, as well as continuous sky-lit bamboo planted galleries. The efficient, repetitive structural system conserved material with exposed post tensioned framing and concrete trusses tying pairs of buildings together to minimize structural redundancy. The placement of the R+D buildings on the site allows for a continuous wetlands landscape to traverse the length of the campus and protect the site against flooding. Linking the R+D wings, administrative office blocks sit over the centralized visitor's entry, exhibition, employee dining, training, and conference facilities. The 3,800 seat dining hall looks out to the wetland's watercourse and is typical of the strong corporate identity connecting the workplace and nature.
