Central DuPage Hospital Cancer Center
Distinguished Building Award Submission
Located on the outskirts of Chicago, the Central Dupage Hospital Cancer Center provides comprehensive cancer care, including chemotherapy and radiation services. The building was conceived as a series of shifting linear volumes to accentuate the relationship with the nearby highway, and to give a visual indication the dynamic procedures being performed inside. The facility is clad in brick, curtain wall, and a terra cotta rainscreen system. The materials are applied to the façade in a sophisticated composition that mitigates the scale of the building and emphasizes the directionality of the highway. The main entry features a grand louvered canopy to shade the glazed front façade, with two lower glass canopies extending from the entry vestibules. The project included the design of a courtyard between the Cancer Center and the neighboring facility, as well as a terraced rooftop courtyard over the ground floor concrete radiation vaults.
