Green Living in Bucktown
Distinguished Building Award Submission
Green Living in Bucktown
This distinctive condominium building is nestled in the dense bustling brick neighborhood of Bucktown in Chicago. Like many features of this building, the façade is rich with meaning. The building has a reddish color, even at night – appearing with the depth and luminosity of a crafted piece of modern furniture. Rich deep red wood veneered rain screen panels clad this five unit building. Urban street facing corner balconies with glass rails allow the upper units a quiet respite.
Zoning height restrictions provided the canvas for a below grade two story duplex with a double-height interior corner atria. The site is developed with permeable surfaces and native plantings throughout. Rain gardens and rain barrels reduce storm water runoff. Recycled materials and FSC certified wood flooring is used throughout. An expansive green roof and communal deck sits atop the building’s garage. The building is now a designated stop in the Neighborhood’s House Walk and remains an icon in the residential neighborhood.
