Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center

Distinguished Building Award Submission

The Mayo Clinic sought to develop the premiere wellness center in the world. Initial conceptual notions for the facility used words such as, motivational, magnificent, and holistic.

Our planning strategy was to develop opportunities that motivate and affect behavioral changes. Internal view corridors up and through the facility were strategically placed. Upon entry, glimpses of multiple exercise areas including the pool, exercise equipment area, running track and group exercise areas are apparent. At key zones, areas for healthy eating and viewing are placed to reinforce the wellness centers mission.

When one references the Mayo Clinic, one thinks of the highest level of quality healthcare within the world. The development of the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center is no less committed to this mission of quality based, outstanding commitment to wellness. Material selection, lighting design and environmental comfort were challenged to produce an environment that is instantly recognizable and represent the image that Mayo Clinic is known for. Natural materials, including stone, wood, glass, and terra cotta reinforce operational strategies of the facility, suggesting something other.

With a balanced approach to wellness, the integration of mind and body, in the forefront, our building forms aim to express this integrated approach.
