Private Residence (California)

Interior Architecture Award Submission

Nestled into the village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, this house in perfectly located at the center of the arc of Carmel Bay along its famous Scenic Road with a view of the full bay framed by old-growth Cypress trees and with direct access to Carmel Beach.

The house is warm and modern – a contemporary take on the bungalows common to Carmel-by-the-Sea with an emphasis on natural materials and comfortable spaces.

The plan is open and meant to flow between the various spaces. The areas designated for specific functions could be noted as rooms – 4 on the main floor (living room, kitchen, office, master suite), one on the second floor (the meditation room), and two support rooms on the lower level (garage, exercise room / photo studio). The exterior courtyard is, in many ways, the fifth “room” of the main level at the heart of the house.
