Crystal View Townhomes

Regional & Urban Design Award Submission

Located on a 9 acre infill site within walking distance of downtown Urbana, Crystal View Townhomes is an IHDA funded, newly designed and constructed 70-unit mixed-income, and affordable community with a focus on families. The site previously contained a deteriorated 1950ís barracks style housing development originally built by the local Housing Authority that was demolished.

The community offers residents a variety of housing options comprised of modestly sized single family, town homes, duplex, and four unit structures. The design is inspired by the simple clean forms of Midwestern vernacular architecture incorporating prominent steeply pitched gable roofs, comfortable front porches, lively colors and detail variations that create an interesting pedestrian-friendly street rhythm and the feel of an intimate small town setting.

A community building marks the entry to the neighborhood while providing community space, exercise and computer rooms, and a play area for the residents.

The project incorporates a series of green and sustainable features such as a site wide geothermal system, Solar Photovoltaic Panels, parkway rain gardens, and natural plantings. The project also received a State DCEO Energy Efficient Construction Grant which significantly reduces project utility and operational costs.
