Frankfurt Airport

Unbuilt Design Award Submission

The concept design for the new Vehicle Approach to Terminal 1 and Bus Plaza at the Frankfurt Airport addresses the challenge of creating a new front door, enhancing the airport’s identity, and expanding the terminal on a land locked site. The new Vehicle Approach to Terminal 1 and Bus Plaza is conceived as an intermodal concourse; a great urban room beneath a large glass canopy, actualized by transportation and pedestrian movements. The new canopy not only brands the airport, but also functions as an armature to collect rainwater and recycle and convert sunlight into energy through photovoltaic cells on the canopy. A park on the roof of the Concourse points to Frankfurt’s tradition of gardens, providing a place of repose for travelers, visitors and airport employees. Additionally, a green wall is incorporated into the Concourse element for improved air quality and filtered sunlight. The canopy and concourse serve as a new front door for Frankfurt Airport, strengthening connections, providing additional space for retail and concessions, and establishing a more visible address for Terminal support facilities, such as hotels, offices, bus and rail lines.
