Old Orchard Woods

Interior Architecture Award Submission

A mixed-use residential community north of downtown Chicago straddling rural and urban settings with a 160-acre forest preserve to the west and the interstate, mid-rise offices and a regional mall to the east. The 650 dwellings boast miles of unobstructed views stretching west toward the horizon, southeast to the Chicago skyline and east to Lake Michigan.

Open plans with floor-to-ceiling glass maximize natural light and take full advantage of the vistas through the building’s sculpted towers. Private balconies and green roofs further assist in transitioning living space to the outdoors.

Two-story lobbies finished with black terrazzo floors and shot-blast white marble walls open to the entry courtyard and forest providing a serene transition from a hectic workday. Amenities include penthouse exercise rooms with views of the city and a two-story natatorium seemingly nestled in the treetops. A 430-foot sundeck connects the towers and forms a portico into the entry courtyard.
