Matrix Gateway Complex

Citation of Merit

This design is "an iconic idea that will have legs beyond itself," said a juror. "It's not a metaphor—it's monumental," explained another. The mega-building was designed to work double-duty: first as a waterfront gateway greeting visitors to Dubai; and second as a mixed-use space, essentially housing a city within a city. It would have combined commercial, residential, hospitality and other programming. According to the project description: "The team produced a 180-meter cube designed on an 18-meter supergrid containing many of the components of a great urban center." A semi-transparent façade containing screens and photovoltaics allows outsiders to look in. In another show of openness, a bridge punctuates the complex through a 54-square-meter opening.
