Overview

Out with the old, in with the new—but you can't stop production in the meantime. The architects had to create a design/build plan that would allow for the accommodation and installation of a new large printing press while respecting the client's need to keep working the entire time. An exterior shell of precast concrete and glass allowed workers to erect the new façade quickly and enclose the added-on space. Horizontal reveals soften the transition between the old and new buildings. The new printing press is positioned so passersby can view it in the oversized west-facing window. An added bonus is the ambient light that floods this once dark factory. After the old printing press was removed, the newsprint and packaging areas were renovated, improving the work flow and operations. Jurors found the project "elegant and very straightforward." One juror said: "The architects gave it a new presence."
