Overview

Traditional Chinese garden pathways inspired the design for this project for a manufacturer and exporter of power tools. The architects had to both separate and unite the company's five departmental divisions. An entrance space welcomes guests and staff while a separate garden is reserved for employees only. East/west, multi-level pathways link the stone-façaded buildings and their green roofs to one another. A perforated roof juts out from the training department's building, allowing sunlight to dapple through onto a landscaped running path below. A trapezoidal shape dots the plan—seen in the lobby as a metal light monitor, symbolizing the client's machine tool products, with a stairway winding through it and seen again where it punctuates the roof. Jurors thought this project exhibits "moves that are intelligent."
