Overview

"This is the way they should be designing" for China's ongoing, explosive growth, a juror said of the master plan for a 750-square-mile island in the Yangtze River—twice the size of the city of Chicago. The aim is to create space for 800,000 new inhabitants while preserving farmland and wilderness and installing public transportation. The plan encompasses protected ecosystems, greenways and organic cropland into an urbanizing landscape.
