Jury Comments

There is both an "exuberance and ambition" in Whitehurst's work. He has a conscious philosophy of architecture that has remained consistent through this career, from earlier work at Iowa-based firms and Florian Wierdbowski Architecture to his current projects with Bailey Edward Design.

"Through his work comes a desire to express strong design ideas," said one juror.

Architect Stephen Wierzbowski wrote in a letter of recommendation, "I have particularly fond memories of [Whitehurst's] design work on the 'Art Inside Out' exhibit at The Art Institute of Chicago. His monumental design contribution to that project made it one of the best Florian Wierzbowski ever produced."

According to Villa Park Director Valerie Dehner and Associate Director Audra Hamernik, during Whitehurst's tenure as chair of the Villa Park Planning and Zoning Commission, "new ordinances have been approved that have shaped and improved Villa Park's built environment. [He] has also been directly involved with all planning studies for the last 10 years. His specific involvement with the Villa Park Downtown Master Plans is resulting in the redevelopment of our downtown areas. Walking through our downtown, we can see Robin's aesthetic mark on the built environment."
